What to see in New Delhi

1. Fort Rouge
   Once the residence of the Mughal emperors, this palace-fort with its vast red sandstone walls shows what imperial power looked like in Shahjahanabad.
2. Qutub Minar
   This red sandstone minaret, about 73 metres tall, rises over a site where several centuries of Delhi's history overlap.
3. Tombe de Humayun
   This mausoleum of red sandstone and white marble stands at the heart of a vast four-part garden and foreshadows the Mughal architecture the Taj Mahal would later bring to perfection.
4. India Gate
   This tall sandstone arch, designed by Edwin Lutyens, stands at the end of a long vista of lawns and honours the soldiers of the British Indian Army who died in the First World War.
5. Chandni Chowk
   Chandni Chowk is the main artery of Old Delhi, a dense and noisy avenue running out from the Red Fort, where every side lane specialises in one trade or product.
6. Temple du Lotus
   This lotus-shaped building, with white marble petals rising from surrounding pools, is a real pocket of calm in the middle of Delhi.
7. Akshardham
   This Hindu temple complex, inaugurated in 2005 on the banks of the Yamuna, stands out for the fineness of its carvings in pink sandstone and white marble, and for the quiet of its gardens and water basins.
8. Jama Masjid
   Completed in 1656 under Shah Jahan, it is one of the largest mosques in India and rises above the old city of Delhi.
