What to see in Salvador

  1. Pelourinho
Pelourinho is the colonial heart of Salvador, with steep cobbled lanes, colorful facades and baroque churches.
  2. Elevador Lacerda
This public lift links the waterfront lower city to the historic upper city, and it is one of Salvador's defining sights.
  3. Mercado Modelo
Housed in a former customs building facing the Bay of All Saints, the Mercado Modelo gathers Bahian crafts under one roof, in a lively and noisy atmosphere.
  4. Église São Francisco
You step out of the bright streets of the Pelourinho into a nave covered from floor to ceiling in carved, gilded wood, and it is genuinely dizzying.
  5. Farol da Barra
Set on the point where the Bay of All Saints meets the Atlantic, the lighthouse stands over a fort and an open esplanade facing the water.
  6. Plage de Porto da Barra
This small crescent-shaped beach, opening onto the Bay of All Saints, is the open-air living room of Salvador's locals.
  7. Igreja do Bonfim
Standing on the Sagrada Colina in the Itapagipe peninsula, this church is one of the most alive places of devotion in Salvador, where Catholic faith and Afro-Brazilian traditions meet.
  8. Praia do Forte (excursion)
A former fishing village on the coast north of Salvador, Praia do Forte has kept an unhurried pace, with sandy lanes and coconut palms.
