What to see in Rio de Janeiro

  1. Christ Rédempteur (Corcovado)
With its arms spread wide above the Tijuca forest, the statue watches over the whole city, and you suddenly see how Rio fits between its hills, its bay and the ocean.
  2. Pain de Sucre
This granite monolith rising out of Guanabara Bay gives one of the most complete views of Rio: you see at a glance how the city fits between sea and hills.
  3. Copacabana
Four and a half kilometres of curving sand with the city right behind it: Cariocas come here at all hours to play, swim, walk or simply watch the world go by.
  4. Ipanema
Ipanema is the beach where everyday Rio shows itself: surfers, families, footvolley players and neighbourhood regulars all share one long ribbon of sand, between the Dois Irmãos hills and the rock of Arpoador.
  5. Escalier Selarón & Lapa
This staircase, created by the Chilean-born artist Jorge Selarón, is covered in ceramic tiles from many countries, with color spilling over every step.
  6. Jardin botanique
At the foot of Corcovado, this garden offers a shady, quiet break from the city, with plants from around the world and patches of Atlantic forest.
  7. Santa Teresa
Set on a hill above the city center, this neighborhood keeps its cobbled streets, nineteenth-century villas and artists' studios, which give it the pace of a village.
  8. Musée de Demain
Santiago Calatrava's building, with its white wings reaching out over Guanabara Bay, is a sight in its own right.
