What to see in Manaus

1. Théâtre Amazonas
   This rubber-boom opera house rises out of the Amazon rainforest, crowned by a dome in the colours of the Brazilian flag.
2. Rencontre des Eaux (Meeting of Waters)
   Here the Rio Negro, dark as tea, and the ochre, silt-heavy Rio Solimões run side by side for several kilometres before blending into the Amazon.
3. Mercado Adolpho Lisboa
   This late nineteenth-century market, whose iron structure was made in Paris and shipped over by boat, stands on the bank of the Rio Negro.

5. Musée de l'Amazonie (MUSA, tour)
   MUSA is a museum set in the forest on the edge of the Ducke reserve, well away from central Manaus.
6. Praia da Ponta Negra
   This is Manaus's river beach, on the banks of the Rio Negro, where the city turns toward the dark water and the vast Amazonian horizon.
7. Palácio Rio Negro
   This grand rubber-era mansion tells the story of Manaus's wealth and ambition in the early twentieth century better than many museums do.
8. Rio Negro (dauphins roses, Novo Airão)
   At Novo Airão, the Rio Negro turns the dark colour of strong tea, and Amazon river dolphins come close to a floating platform, so you can watch them from a few metres away in their own habitat.
