What to see in Perth

1. Kings Park
   This large hilltop park looks over the Swan River and the Perth skyline, and it protects a big piece of original bushland in the middle of the city.
2. Rottnest Island (quokkas)
   A short ferry ride from Fremantle, this almost car-free island gives you a slow pace, clear bays and the company of quokkas, small curious marsupials that seem to be smiling.
3. Fremantle (marchés & prison)
   Fremantle is Perth's old port, and in a single morning you can go from the stalls of a Victorian covered market to the harsh history of a convict prison.
4. Cottesloe Beach
   Cottesloe is the Perth beach everyone knows, easy to reach by train from the city and sheltered by offshore reefs that keep the water gentler.
5. Elizabeth Quay
   This waterfront quarter was dug out of the middle of the city to open Perth back up to the Swan River.
6. Swan Valley (vignobles)
   This is the oldest wine region in Western Australia, a short drive from Perth, spread across flat vineyards, river banks and old townships.
7. Pinnacles Desert (excursion)
   Thousands of limestone pillars rise out of pale yellow sand, in a landscape that feels like another planet.
8. Perth Mint
   The Perth Mint is a working mint housed in a historic building on the eastern edge of the city centre, and it makes the importance of gold to Western Australia feel very real.
