What to see in Mexico City

  1. Zócalo & Cathédrale
This vast open square at the heart of the historic center puts power, faith and Aztec remains in a single line of sight.
  2. Musée national d'anthropologie
The museum brings together the great civilizations of Mesoamerica in one place, from the Olmecs to the Mexica, then moves on to the indigenous peoples of today.
  3. Teotihuacán (excursion)
Teotihuacán is one of the great pre-Columbian cities of Mexico, and you only grasp its scale by walking the Avenue of the Dead between pyramids that tower over the plain.
  4. Chapultepec (château & parc)
This wooded hill, inhabited long before the Spanish arrived, now overlooks one of the largest urban parks in Latin America.
  5. Coyoacán & Musée Frida Kahlo
The Casa Azul is the house where Frida Kahlo was born, lived and died, and you feel her presence here far more than in a conventional museum.
  6. Xochimilco (trajineras)
Xochimilco is a living remnant of the lake Mexico City was built on: canals lined with chinampas, the pre-Hispanic farming islands, which you explore aboard brightly painted boats.
  7. Palais des Beaux-Arts
This pale marble palace, art nouveau outside and art deco inside, took more than thirty years to finish and is still slowly sinking into the ground of Mexico City.
  8. Templo Mayor
Right beside the cathedral and a few steps from the Zócalo, the remains of Tenochtitlan's ceremonial heart lie just below the streets of the modern capital.
