What to see in Lisbon

1. Castelo de São Jorge
   Set on the highest of the central hills, the castle stands on a site that has been inhabited since antiquity, and it gives the clearest view of how Lisbon spreads between the Tagus and its old neighbourhoods.
2. Mosteiro dos Jerónimos
   This pale limestone monastery is the great showpiece of Manueline style, where the stone is carved with ropes, shells and motifs born of sea voyages.
3. Torre de Belém
   Belém Tower stands on the edge of the Tagus, right where the navigators of the Age of Discovery set out.
4. Alfama & Miradouro de Santa Luzia
   Alfama is Lisbon's oldest neighbourhood, a tangle of steep lanes where laundry hangs from windows and fado sometimes drifts out of a doorway.
5. Praça do Comércio
   This vast square opening onto the Tagus, framed by yellow arcades, is the heart of the Lisbon rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake.
6. Time Out Market (Mercado da Ribeira)
   Under the historic hall of the Mercado da Ribeira, counters run by Lisbon cooks and producers share long communal tables.
7. LX Factory
   This former industrial complex in Alcântara, tucked beneath the 25 de Abril Bridge, has been taken over by studios, shops and places to eat without losing its factory character.
8. Oceanário de Lisboa
   The Oceanário is built around one huge central tank that you circle on two levels, connecting the world's oceans as a single body of water.
