What to see in Hanoi

  1. Vieux quartier (36 rues)
The Old Quarter is the merchant heart of Hanoi, a tangle of narrow lanes where many streets still carry the name of the trade or goods that made them known.
  2. Lac Hoan Kiem & Temple Ngoc Son
In the middle of the old quarter, this small lake is where Hanoians come to stroll, exercise and meet at all hours.
  3. Temple de la Littérature
This former Confucian sanctuary, which also served as a place of learning for scholars, offers a calm pause in the middle of Hanoi, with shaded courtyards, ponds and tiled roofs.
  4. Mausolée de Hô Chi Minh
This large grey granite building stands over Ba Dinh Square, where a key part of the country's modern history took place.
  5. Théâtre des marionnettes sur l'eau
This art form was born in the rice-farming villages of the Red River delta, and here you can see it on a small water stage in the heart of the Old Quarter.
  6. Train Street
A working railway running through the city, squeezed between two rows of houses so close to the tracks that daily life unfolds a few steps from the carriages.
  7. Musée d'ethnographie
This is the place to understand that Vietnam is not a single culture: the museum covers the 54 officially recognised ethnic groups through their objects, clothing and rituals.
  8. Baie d'Halong (excursion)
Limestone islets covered in greenery rise out of calm, dark green water, and the view shifts with every turn of the boat.
