What to see in Bilbao

1. Musée Guggenheim
   Frank Gehry's building, with its curves of titanium set on the bank of the Nervión, is a work of art in its own right and changed the face of Bilbao.
2. Casco Viejo et Plaza Nueva
   This is where Bilbao began, a tangle of pedestrian lanes close to the estuary where you can still feel the city as it was before the big redevelopment projects.
3. Mercado de la Ribera
   This huge covered market sits on the bank of the Nervión, right next to the Casco Viejo, and it is still a place where locals do their everyday shopping rather than a staged attraction.
4. Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bilbao
   In a single visit you can follow Spanish and Basque art from the old masters to the twentieth century.
5. Funiculaire et mont Artxanda
   The little funicular lifts you above the city in a few minutes, and Bilbao suddenly opens up below you: the river, the bridges, the rooftops of the centre and the green hills all around.
6. Pont Zubizuri
   This white footbridge by Santiago Calatrava, opened in 1997, is one of the symbols of a Bilbao reinvented around the Nervión.
