What to see in Auckland

1. Sky Tower
   Standing right in the middle of the city centre, the Sky Tower gives Auckland its skyline and lets you take in, at a glance, a city set between two harbours and ringed by volcanic cones and islands.
2. Île de Waiheke (ferry, vignobles)
   A short ferry ride from central Auckland, Waiheke runs at a completely different pace: vine-covered hills, quiet bays and views across the Hauraki Gulf.
3. Mont Eden (Maungawhau)
   Auckland's highest natural point gives you a full 360 degree view over the city, its two harbours and the other volcanic cones.
4. Auckland War Memorial Museum
   Set on a hill in the Auckland Domain, this neoclassical museum is both a war memorial and a gateway to the story of New Zealand and the Pacific.
5. Piha Beach
   A long black-sand beach pounded by the Tasman Sea, overlooked by the dark bulk of Lion Rock and backed by the bush-covered Waitākere Ranges.
6. Rangitoto Island
   Rangitoto is a young, perfectly symmetrical volcano rising from the Hauraki Gulf, and the ferry ride from Auckland already sets the scene.
7. Viaduct Harbour & Wynyard Quarter
   These two districts, reclaimed from the Waitematā Harbour, have traded their industrial past for a waterside promenade of wharves and boats.
8. Ponsonby Road
   Ponsonby Road follows the ridge of the suburb, two kilometres west of the city centre, and it is where Auckland slows down: cafes, restaurants, independent boutiques and carefully kept timber villas.
