What to see in Vienna

1. Schloss Schönbrunn
   Once the summer residence of the Habsburgs, Schönbrunn pairs imperial apartments with vast formal gardens.
2. Stephansdom
   The Stephansdom is the heart of Vienna, a dark Gothic mass of stone set among the pedestrian streets of the old center.
3. Kunsthistorisches Museum
   Opened in 1891, this museum is a palace in its own right, with marble, gilding and a great dome housing the Habsburg art collections.
4. Hofburg
   The Hofburg is not a single block but a series of courtyards, wings and chapels added over the centuries, so you read Habsburg history stone by stone.
5. Belvedere
   The Belvedere is one of Vienna's finest Baroque ensembles: two palaces facing each other, linked by a long sloping garden that opens a clear view over the city.
6. Naschmarkt
   This long market runs between two major avenues and mixes fresh produce stalls, spices and restaurants, with a lively atmosphere where Viennese locals still come to shop.
7. Prater
   The Prater puts an old-fashioned funfair and a large stretch of woods and meadows on the same ground, which is rare in the middle of a capital.
8. Figlmüller
   Figlmüller is one of the places most closely associated with the Wiener Schnitzel, a breaded cutlet so large it spills well over the edge of the plate.
