What to see in Venice

1. Place Saint-Marc & Basilique
   Piazza San Marco is the one large open space in a city of narrow lanes, and you often reach it through a tight passage that reveals it all at once.
2. Palais des Doges
   The Doge's Palace packs a thousand years of Venetian power into a single building, from lavish state rooms to grim prison cells.
3. Pont du Rialto
   It is the oldest of the bridges crossing the Grand Canal, a single white stone arch lined with small shops in the heart of Venice's historic trading district.
4. Grand Canal (vaporetto)
   The Grand Canal is Venice's main street, a long S-shaped waterway lined with palaces that tell centuries of history.

   This is where Venetian painting makes sense, from gilded late medieval altarpieces to the great Renaissance canvases, shown in the rooms of a former religious confraternity.
6. Murano & Burano
   Two lagoon islands with very different characters: Murano lives by its glass furnaces, Burano by its painted houses and its lace.
7. Mercato di Rialto
   At the foot of the Rialto Bridge, this market has been where Venetians do their shopping for centuries, and it still keeps that rhythm: vendors calling out, crates being unloaded, the smell of the sea and ripe fruit.
