What to see in Valparaíso

  1. Cerro Alegre & Cerro Concepción
These two neighbouring hills make up the heart of Valparaíso's UNESCO-listed historic quarter, with colourful corrugated-metal houses, steep lanes and views over the bay.
  2. Ascensor Reina Victoria
This wood-and-metal funicular climbs from the lower port district up to the heights of Cerro Alegre.
  3. La Sebastiana (maison de Neruda)
La Sebastiana is the house Pablo Neruda loved in Valparaíso, perched on a hillside above the bay.
  4. Plaza Sotomayor & port
This is Valparaíso's grand ceremonial square, set at the foot of the hills and facing the bay, and it shows the port city at its most legible.
  5. Musée à ciel ouvert (Cerro Bellavista)
About twenty murals spread across the slopes of Cerro Bellavista, painted by artists with very different styles, including Roberto Matta and Mario Carreño.
  6. Paseo 21 de Mayo (Cerro Artillería)
This cliff-edge lookout opens onto the whole bay of Valparaíso, with warships moored below, the working port and the colourful houses tumbling down toward the sea.
  7. Isla Negra (Neruda, excursion)
Isla Negra is not an island but a coastal village, where Pablo Neruda kept enlarging his house over the years, facing the Pacific.
  8. Viña del Mar (plage)
This is the beach of the busiest seaside city on Chile's central coast, where the cool Pacific meets a promenade lined with palm trees and apartment blocks.
