What to see in Samarkand

1. Registan
   The Registan is a large square framed by three madrasas whose facades, covered in blue, turquoise and gold tilework, have kept their power.
2. Mausolée Gur-e-Amir
   This mausoleum holds the tomb of Timur, the conqueror who made Samarkand the capital of his empire, along with members of his family, including his grandson Ulugh Beg.
3. Chah-i-Zinda
   This alley of mausoleums, covered in turquoise and cobalt glazed tiles, is one of the most striking funerary ensembles in Central Asia.
4. Mosquée Bibi-Khanym
   Built under Timur between 1399 and 1404, this mosque remains one of the largest in Central Asia.
5. Observatoire d'Ulugh Beg
   The site preserves the remains of one of the great fifteenth-century observatories, founded by the prince-astronomer Ulugh Beg.
6. Bazar Siyob
   Siyob Bazaar is one of Samarkand's major popular markets, used mostly by residents rather than visitors.
7. Fabrique de papier de soie (Konigil)
   You see a craft that is still practised by hand: mulberry bark is soaked, beaten, spread and dried using methods that have changed little over the centuries.
