What to see in Okinawa

  1. Château de Shuri
This hilltop gusuku above Naha was the heart of the Ryukyu Kingdom, and it tells a story of its own, caught between Chinese and Japanese influences, in curved stone walls and red-lacquered halls.
  2. Kokusai-dori
This is the main street of Naha, rebuilt after the war and now the city's favourite place for a stroll.
  3. Marché Makishi
Makishi Market is Naha's pantry, set inside a web of covered arcades a short walk from Kokusai-dori.
  4. Aquarium Churaumi
Set in the Ocean Expo Park on the north of the island, this is one of the largest aquariums in the world, and it focuses on the waters around Okinawa rather than a catalogue of species from elsewhere.
  5. Plage de Naminoue
This is Naha's city beach, set right below the cliff where the Naminoue-gū shrine stands.
  6. Îles Kerama (Zamami)
Barely an hour by boat from Naha, Zamami opens onto strikingly clear water in the shade the Japanese call "Kerama blue".
  7. Cap Manzamo
A limestone cliff carved by the sea, shaped a bit like an elephant's trunk, rises above the very clear water of the East China Sea.
  8. Yunangi
This small Okinawan home-cooking restaurant, a few minutes from Kokusai-dori, has been a local favorite for more than fifty years.
