What to see in Cape Town

1. Table Mountain (téléphérique)
   The flat top of Table Mountain overlooks Cape Town, its bay and the Atlantic Ocean, and when the cloud settles over the summit like a tablecloth, the place feels truly distinctive.
2. V&A Waterfront
   A former harbour turned into a district of basins, shops, galleries and hotels, set against the foot of Table Mountain.
3. Robben Island
   This island off Cape Town served as a political prison for much of the apartheid era, and Nelson Mandela spent close to eighteen years here.
4. Cap de Bonne-Espérance
   The Cape of Good Hope is a rocky headland battered by the Atlantic, at the tip of a peninsula where the fynbos, a plant region found nowhere else on Earth, clings to the cliffs.
5. Bo-Kaap
   The pastel-coloured houses climb the slopes of Signal Hill, and the neighbourhood keeps the memory of the Cape Malay community, descended from enslaved people and exiles brought from South-East Asia and the Indian Ocean region in the 17th and 18th centuries.
6. Plage de Boulders (manchots)
   Granite boulders shaped by erosion shelter a colony of African penguins that lives just a few metres from visitors.
7. Kirstenbosch
   The garden sits at the eastern foot of Table Mountain, so the mountain seems to watch over beds of fynbos, the dry shrubland native to the Cape.
8. Camps Bay
   A long white-sand beach at the foot of the Twelve Apostles, where the mountains seem to drop straight into the sea.
