What to see in Cairo

1. Pyramides de Gizeh & Sphinx
   These are the only Wonders of the ancient world still standing, rising from a desert plateau that feels strangely apart from the city just beyond it.
2. Grand Musée égyptien
   The museum brings together a major part of ancient Egyptian heritage, including the complete Tutankhamun collection, in a building designed to display it.
3. Musée égyptien (Tahrir)
   It is one of the largest museums devoted entirely to ancient Egypt, and you see up close pieces that shaped what we know about this civilisation.
4. Khan el-Khalili
   Khan el-Khalili is a maze of covered alleys where trades cluster by street: copper, silver, spices, perfumes, lamps, textiles.
5. Citadelle de Saladin & Mosquée Mohammed Ali
   The citadel sits on the Mokattam hills above Cairo, and it holds the city's history across many centuries, from Saladin's original fortress to the Mamluk and Ottoman additions.
6. Le Caire copte
   Coptic Cairo packs into a few hectares one of Egypt's oldest Christian centres, where churches built on Roman remains sit alongside later chapels.
7. Parc Al-Azhar
   Built on a former rubbish dump and rubble heap, this large terraced park gives a wide view over the minarets, domes and the Citadel of Saladin.
8. Felouque sur le Nil
   The felucca is a wooden sailboat with a triangular lateen sail, a way of moving on the Nile that has been used for centuries.
