What to see in Jakarta

  1. Monas (Monument national)
This tall pale stone column, topped with a golden flame, stands over Merdeka Square and honors the struggle for independence.
  2. Kota Tua (vieille ville)
This is the old centre of Dutch colonial Batavia, and you can still read Jakarta's history in its facades, canals and wide cobbled square.
  3. Musée national
It is the best single introduction to the diversity of the archipelago, taking you from prehistory through the Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms to the cultures of the islands under one roof.
  4. Mosquée Istiqlal & Cathédrale
These two buildings face each other across a single street, and their closeness says a lot about Indonesia: the largest mosque in Southeast Asia on one side, a neo-Gothic cathedral on the other.
  5. Mille Îles (Pulau Seribu)
This string of islands in the Java Sea, stretching about forty kilometres off Jakarta, gives you a real break from the capital after just a few hours by boat.
  6. Ancol Dreamland
Ancol Dreamland is Jakarta's big waterfront leisure park, where local families spend the day beside the bay.
  7. Grand Indonesia
Grand Indonesia is one of Jakarta's major shopping complexes, set opposite the Bundaran HI roundabout and the Selamat Datang Monument.
  8. Café Batavia
Set in one of the oldest buildings facing Taman Fatahillah, Café Batavia offers a rare colonial atmosphere in Jakarta.
