What to see in Galle

  1. Fort de Galle (remparts)
The ramparts of Galle, built by the Portuguese and later strengthened by the Dutch, enclose a living neighbourhood where people still walk between colonial houses, churches and small shops.
  2. Phare de Galle
This white tower stands at the southern tip of the fort, facing the Indian Ocean, and anchors the whole walk along the ramparts.
  3. Plage d'Unawatuna
A crescent-shaped bay lined with palm trees, where a reef often keeps the water calmer than elsewhere on the south coast.
  4. Jungle Beach
A small sheltered cove at the foot of Rumassala hill, between Galle and Unawatuna, reached on foot through the trees.
  5. Musée maritime national
Housed in a former Dutch-era warehouse in the heart of Galle Fort, this museum tells the story of the island's relationship with the sea, from fishing to navigation and trade.
  6. Plage de Mirissa (baleines)
Mirissa is a golden crescent of sand lined with coconut palms, where a lazy swim can turn into a day at sea.
  7. Pêcheurs sur échasses (Koggala)
Along Sri Lanka's southern coast, fishermen sit on a simple wooden crossbar planted in the surf, rod in hand, in a balance that looks barely believable.
  8. Dutch Reformed Church
In the heart of Galle Fort, this church from the days of the Dutch East India Company has a plain, quiet atmosphere that feels like a place of remembrance.
