What to see in Dakar

  1. Île de Gorée
A small island with no cars, a short boat ride from Dakar, Gorée is a memorial to the transatlantic slave trade, and its weight is felt in every lane.
  2. Monument de la Renaissance africaine
The monument stands on one of the two volcanic cones that overlook Dakar, and its bronze and copper group, more than 50 metres high, rises toward the sky above the ocean.
  3. Marché Sandaga
Marché Sandaga is one of the great popular markets in the Plateau, in the heart of Dakar.
  4. Lac Rose
Lac Rose is a closed coastal lagoon, cut off from the sea, whose salty water turns pink in the sun because of a microscopic algae.
  5. Plage de N'Gor & île de N'Gor (surf)
Tucked below the Almadies point, Ngor beach still feels like a fishing village, with wooden pirogues hauled up on the sand and nets drying in the breeze, yet it is only a short drive from central Dakar.
  6. Musée des Civilisations noires
Inaugurated on 6 December 2018, this state museum is one of the most significant places dedicated to the history and cultures of Black peoples, in Africa and across the diaspora.
  7. Mosquée de la Divinité
Set on the Corniche-Ouest, right on the Atlantic shore in Ouakam, it rises above one of the most lively stretches of Dakar's coastline.
  8. Village des Arts
The Village des Arts brings together artists' studios and exhibition spaces devoted to contemporary art, with a focus on Senegalese and wider African creation.
