What to see in Bogotá

  1. Musée de l'Or
This museum of the Banco de la República holds one of the largest collections of pre-Columbian gold work in the world.
  2. Monserrate
From the summit, more than 3,100 metres up, Bogotá spreads out in one piece all the way to the mountains on the far side of the plain.
  3. La Candelaria
La Candelaria is Bogotá's colonial quarter, a tangle of steep streets, colorful façades, churches and squares where the capital first took shape.
  4. Musée Botero
The museum brings together, in a former colonial house in La Candelaria, the works Fernando Botero donated to his country: his generously rounded figures, and in the same rooms paintings by Picasso, Miró or Renoir.
  5. Plaza de Bolívar
This is the historic and political heart of Bogotá, a broad open square where the cathedral, Congress and the seats of city and judicial power all face each other.
  6. Mercado de Paloquemao
This is the big working market of central-west Bogotá, where you can watch the city do its shopping: tropical fruit, flowers, meat, fish and small cooking counters.
  7. Usaquén (marché du dimanche)
On Sundays, the cobbled streets of Usaquén, a former village now part of the city, fill with stalls selling crafts, secondhand finds and street food.
  8. Zipaquirá (cathédrale de sel, excursion)
This is a church built inside a former salt mine, about an hour's drive north of Bogotá.
