What to see in Athens

1. Acropole & Parthénon
   The rock above Athens has carried the city's most important sanctuaries since antiquity, and the Parthenon, a Doric temple dedicated to Athena, remains its heart.
2. Musée de l'Acropole
   This museum gathers the sculptures and objects found on the Acropolis rock, a few minutes on foot from the site itself.
3. Plaka
   Plaka is one of the oldest continuously inhabited neighbourhoods of Athens, tucked beneath the Acropolis, with sloping lanes, stairways and neoclassical houses.
4. Agora antique
   This was the civic heart of ancient Athens, where people traded, held trials and argued, and where democracy took shape.
5. Mont Lycabette
   It is the highest point in central Athens, and the one place where you grasp at a glance how the white city spreads all the way to the sea.
6. Musée archéologique national
   This is Athens' largest museum of Greek art and archaeology, and it lets you move through several thousand years of civilisation in a single visit.
7. Monastiraki (marché aux puces)
   Monastiraki is a tight knot of flea market stalls and small shops at the foot of the Acropolis, where an old trinket and a leather souvenir sit a few steps apart.
8. Marché central Varvakios
   Athens' big covered market is where you watch the city do its everyday shopping, far from the shops aimed at visitors.
