What to see in Taipei

1. Taipei 101
   Its eight stacked segments recall a pagoda or a bamboo stalk, and the tower anchors Xinyi so that Taipei can be read at a single glance.
2. Marché de nuit de Shilin
   This is one of Taiwan's best-known night markets, and one of the easiest places to feel what evenings in Taipei are like: narrow lanes, cooking smoke, cheerful crowds and food stalls that never seem to end.
3. Musée national du Palais
   This museum holds a large share of the Forbidden City's collections in Beijing, which came to Taiwan with the Nationalist government.
4. Temple Longshan
   In the heart of the old Wanhua district, this is a temple still in daily use, where locals come to pray as they always have.
5. Elephant Mountain
   A climb up stone steps, just minutes from the metro, that leads to one of the best views over Taipei.
6. Beitou (sources chaudes)
   Beitou is a green valley at the northern edge of Taipei, where sulfurous springs steam among the trees and old buildings from the Japanese era.
7. Ximending
   Ximending is the pedestrian district where Taipei's young crowd has gathered for decades, with fashion shops, cinemas, neon signs and street food stalls.
8. Jiufen (excursion)
   A former mining village clinging to a hillside above the northeast coast, Jiufen combines covered alleys, narrow stairways and teahouses overlooking the sea.
