What to see in Stockholm
- Gamla Stan
Gamla Stan sits on the small island where Stockholm began, and its cobbled lanes, ochre facades and medieval squares can be covered on foot in a few hours. - Musée Vasa
The museum houses the Vasa, a 17th-century Swedish warship that sank shortly after setting out in 1628 and was raised in 1961. - Skansen
Skansen gathers farms, houses and workshops from all over Sweden on a hill in Djurgården, so you can walk through the centuries among Nordic animals. - Palais royal
The official residence of the Swedish monarch, this large baroque palace stands over the water at the edge of Gamla stan. - Fotografiska
Set in a former brick customs house on the Södermalm waterfront, Fotografiska shows contemporary photography in plain, quiet galleries away from the bustle of the centre. - Djurgården
This green island, only a short trip from the city centre, combines forest, meadows, waterfront and some of Stockholm's most visited museums. - Östermalms Saluhall
This brick market hall, open since 1888, is still where Stockholm comes to shop and have lunch. - Pelikan
Pelikan has stood in an Art Nouveau building in Södermalm since 1904, and the restaurant's history in the city goes back much further.
