What to see in Sarajevo

  1. Baščaršija & Sebilj
Baščaršija is the Ottoman heart of Sarajevo, a tangle of cobbled lanes where craftsmen, cafés and minarets have stood side by side since the 16th century.
  2. Pont latin
This stone bridge over the Miljacka dates from the late eighteenth century and is part of everyday life in Sarajevo.
  3. Tunnel de l'Espoir
This passage dug beneath the airport runway in 1993 let besieged Sarajevo bring in food, weapons and the wounded.
  4. Mosquée Gazi Husrev-bey
This is Sarajevo's great Ottoman mosque, in the heart of Baščaršija, and it shows the lasting mark left by Gazi Husrev-beg, the governor who shaped the city in the 16th century.
  5. Cimetière & belvédère du Bastion jaune (Yellow Fortress)
This stone Ottoman bastion sits above the old town and gives one of the best panoramas over Sarajevo, with the rooftops of Baščaršija, the minarets and the surrounding hills all in view.
  6. Vrelo Bosne
This is where the Bosna river begins, at the foot of Mount Igman, among clear water, lawns and tall trees.
  7. Marché Markale
Markale is where Sarajevans still do their everyday shopping, in a market hall from the late Austro-Hungarian period.
  8. Ćevabdžinica Željo
Open since 1968 in the Baščaršija, this ćevabdžinica is one of the places most often named for trying Sarajevo's ćevapi.
