What to see in Ulaanbaatar

  1. Place Sükhbaatar
This large rectangular square is the symbolic heart of Ulaanbaatar, framed by official buildings and gardens.
  2. Monastère Gandan
Gandan is the largest active Buddhist monastery in Mongolia, and one of the few places in the capital where religious life still feels like an everyday routine.
  3. Statue de Gengis Khan (Tsonjin Boldog)
This enormous stainless steel equestrian statue, set on the bank of the Tuul River in the open steppe, shows how central Genghis Khan remains in modern Mongolian identity.
  4. Parc national de Terelj
The park is only an hour or two from the capital, yet its rounded granite formations break sharply with the flat steppe elsewhere in the country.
  5. Palais d'hiver du Bogd Khan
This wooden palace was the winter residence of the eighth Bogd Khan, the last theocratic ruler of Mongolia before the 1921 revolution.
  6. Colline Zaisan
Zaisan Hill gives one of the clearest views over Ulaanbaatar, with the city spreading out toward the surrounding hills and mountains.
  7. Musée national de Mongolie
The museum brings together the whole sweep of Mongolian history, from prehistory through the nomadic empires to the twentieth century, in a single route.
  8. Marché de Narantuul
This is one of the big popular markets of Ulaanbaatar, where the city shows itself without filters: shouting vendors, overflowing stalls, aisles that twist in every direction.
