What to see in Muscat
- Grande Mosquée Sultan Qaboos
This is Oman's main mosque, located west of Muscat near Bawshar, and it is a working place of worship rather than just a monument. - Souq de Mutrah & Corniche
Mutrah Souk is a maze of narrow, shaded lanes along the harbour, where you can find frankincense (luban), Omani silverwork, khanjar daggers and embroidered kummas. - Royal Opera House
Opened in 2011 in Shatti Al Qurum, facing the sea, it is one of the few opera houses in the Gulf. - Palais Al Alam & forts Jalali/Mirani
The palace sits on the seafront of Old Muscat, its blue and gold facade standing out against the bare rocky hills. - Wadi Shab (excursion)
Wadi Shab is a narrow gorge with high rock walls, where turquoise water stays cool even in the height of summer. - Plage de Qurum
This public beach is popular with Muscat families and residents, away from the resort image of the big hotels. - Bimmah Sinkhole
This limestone sinkhole, filled with deep turquoise water, is a striking contrast to the dry landscapes of the Omani coast. - Musée national d'Oman
The museum offers a rare overview of Omani history, from the first human settlements to the present day.
