What to see in Yerevan
- Cascade & Centre Cafesjian
This monumental staircase climbs the slope in central Yerevan and rewards the climb with a view over the city and, on clear days, over Mount Ararat. - Place de la République
Designed by architect Alexander Tamanian in the 1920s and 1930s, the square is a harmonious ensemble of buildings in pink tuff, the volcanic stone that gives Yerevan its distinctive colour. - Vernissage (marché)
The Vernissage is an open-air market where painters, craftspeople and flea-market sellers set up their stalls in the heart of the city. - Matenadaran
The Matenadaran holds a central part of Armenian written memory, from medieval codices to archival documents, in a building designed around the book. - Mémorial du génocide (Tsitsernakaberd)
The memorial sits on a hill on the northwestern edge of Yerevan, facing Mount Ararat, the national symbol Armenians see on clear days. - Geghard & Garni (excursion)
Two very different sites in one half-day trip from Yerevan: a pagan temple in Greco-Roman style above a gorge, then a monastery partly carved into the rock. - Marché GUM
This large covered market is used mostly by Yerevan residents. - Mont Ararat (vue depuis Khor Virap)
From the Khor Virap monastery, Mount Ararat rises almost directly across the plain, only about thirty kilometres away, its snowy twin summits dominating the landscape.
