What to see in Beirut

  1. Corniche & Grotte aux Pigeons (Raouché)
These two limestone islets rise just off Beirut's Corniche, a few minutes from the city centre, and form one of the most recognisable views of the city.
  2. Musée national de Beyrouth
Lebanon's main archaeological museum displays about 1,300 objects in chronological order, from prehistory to the Mamluk period.
  3. Centre-ville & Place de l'Étoile
Nejmeh Square is the political and symbolic heart of downtown Beirut.
  4. Gemmayzé & Mar Mikhaël
These two neighbouring districts in northern Beirut are best explored on foot, among old façades, small shops and terraces.
  5. Musée Sursock
Set in a grand family residence in the Achrafieh district, the Sursock Museum presents modern and contemporary Lebanese and Arab art in a house that still feels like a private home.
  6. Jeita (grotte, excursion)
The site holds two calcite galleries stacked one above the other, shaped over a very long time by an underground river that still runs through the mountain.
  7. Byblos (excursion)
Byblos is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and its few square kilometres hold layers of history that run from Phoenician ruins to Roman remains and a Crusader castle.
  8. Souk El Tayeb (marché fermier)
This is one of the first markets where Lebanese farmers and small producers sell their harvests, cheeses, bread and homemade preserves directly.
