What to see in Arequipa
- Monastère Santa Catalina
Behind its high walls of pale volcanic stone, the convent is a quiet little town of its own, with lanes, courtyards and cells. - Plaza de Armas & Cathédrale
Arequipa's main square is lined with arcades of white volcanic stone, known as sillar, and the cathedral stretches along one entire side. - Canyon de Colca (Cruz del Cóndor)
The canyon opens onto a drop of several kilometres across, with the Colca river a thin line far below. - Musée Santuarios Andinos (Juanita)
The museum is home to Juanita, a young Inca girl offered in sacrifice some five centuries ago and found frozen near the summit of Ampato volcano. - Yanahuara (mirador)
Beneath the white sillar arches, the volcanic stone that built the city, El Misti rises above the rooftops of Arequipa, flanked by Chachani and Pichu Pichu. - Mercado San Camilo
Arequipa's central market, under a large iron hall, where the city has long done its shopping. - Volcan Misti (vue)
With its almost perfect cone, Misti looms over Arequipa and gives the city its backdrop. - Route du Sillar
The Sillar Route takes you to the open-air quarries where the white volcanic stone that built Arequipa's historic centre is cut.
