What to see in Antigua Guatemala
- Parque Central & Cathédrale
Parque Central is the natural starting point in Antigua: a shaded square where locals meet, ringed by arcades and colonial buildings. - Arche de Santa Catalina
This yellow arch spans 5a Avenida Norte and recalls the life of cloistered nuns, who used it to go from the convent to the school without setting foot outside. - Cerro de la Cruz
From this hill just north of the center, you take in all of Antigua at once: the grid of colonial streets, the tiled roofs and Volcán de Agua closing off the horizon. - Volcan Pacaya (randonnée)
Pacaya is an active volcano about an hour from Antigua, where you walk across cooled lava flows in a black, mineral landscape that contrasts with the green valley below. - Volcan Acatenango (trek)
Acatenango is a stratovolcano next to Antigua, joined to Volcán de Fuego, one of the most active volcanoes in Central America. - Couvent des Capucines
This ruined convent is one of the best preserved religious complexes in Antigua, and it makes it easy to grasp how cloistered nuns actually lived. - Mercado de Artesanías
This is the place where the range of Guatemalan crafts is easiest to see all in one spot, away from the shops along the main streets. - Casa Santo Domingo (musées)
This former Dominican convent, damaged by earthquakes in the 18th century, now holds several museums among gardens and ruins.
