What to see in Accra

  1. Mausolée Kwame Nkrumah
The mausoleum holds the tomb of Kwame Nkrumah, the figure behind Ghana's independence and its first president, within a memorial park built around it.
  2. Jamestown & phare
Jamestown is Accra's oldest fishing quarter, built around its lighthouse and the coastal forts nearby.
  3. Marché de Makola
Makola is the big, working market of central Accra, where the city's daily economy is on full display: traders behind their stalls, deliveries arriving at all hours, and narrow lanes crowded with fabrics, cookware and spare parts.
  4. Plage de Labadi
Labadi is the busiest beach on the Ghanaian coast, and one of the places where Accra gathers for leisure.
  5. Centre national des Arts (marché d'artisanat)
The Arts Centre market brings together much of Ghana's craftsmanship in one place: wood carvings, kente and batik cloth, beads, brass objects and adinkra stamps.
  6. Osu (Oxford Street)
Oxford Street is the liveliest strip in Osu, the neighbourhood where Accra comes alive after dark.
  7. Château d'Osu
Built as a fortress in the seventeenth century and held in turn by several European powers, Osu Castle now serves as a seat of Ghanaian government.
  8. Aburi (jardins botaniques, excursion)
Set on the Akuapem hills about thirty kilometres north of Accra, the gardens are noticeably cooler than the capital and hold a dense, lush vegetation that feels very different from the coast.
